At least six people lost their lives in a tragic road accident early Wednesday morning in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. A speeding SUV crashed into a stationary truck parked along the roadside.
The accident took place on the Panipat-Khatima National Highway near Jaydev Hotel in the Titawi police station area.
Eight people were travelling from Faridpur in Haryana to Haridwar to immerse the ashes in the Ganga after the recent death of a family member. Their religious journey ended in tragedy when the SUV lost control and collided with the truck at high speed.
The impact was so severe that the car was completely damaged. The car occupants were trapped in the mangled remains. Locals rushed to the accident spot and immediately informed the authorities. Police, with help from locals, carried out rescue operations.
All the victims were rushed to the district hospital in Muzaffarnagar. Doctors declared five of them dead on arrival. Two critically hurt passengers were sent to a higher medical centre, where one later died, bringing the death toll to six. The deceased have been identified as Mohini (44), Anju (30), Vimmi (35), Rajender (50), Shiva (30, driver), and Piyush (30), all residents of Faridpur, Haryana. One male passenger is still in critical condition.
Reacting to the accident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow. Yogi Adityanath Office shared a post on X stating in Hindi, loosely translated: “Chief Minister Shri @myogiadityanath ji Maharaj has expressed profound grief over the loss of lives in a tragic road accident in Muzaffarnagar district and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. Maharaj ji has directed district officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured. Maharaj ji has prayed to Lord Shri Ram for the peace of the departed souls and the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Police have started post-mortem procedures and are probing the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings suggest the SUV was speeding and driver negligence may have played a role.
