With the state assembly elections approaching, political tensions are rising. On Monday, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited the State Election Commission, demanding that the state police not be deployed for any election-related duties.
Adhikari was accompanied by a Bharatiya Janata Party delegation including Tapas Roy, Shankar Ghosh, Arjun Singh and Kaustav Bagchi.
Citing recent allegations of torture against Hindus in Murshidabad, Adhikari said, "Everyone knows what will happen if Hindus are excluded in places like Dhulian and Shamsherganj and voting takes place under the watch of this police force. That’s why we’ve come to demand that the state police stay out of the elections entirely."
The BJP leader further accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of manipulating the voter list. He claimed that fake names were being added in exchange for money through administrative channels in every district.
Referring specifically to Kakdwip, Adhikari alleged that names of Rohingya individuals were included in the voter list there for a bribe of ₹10,000. “This isn’t an isolated incident. The insertion of fake names is happening across the state,” he said, demanding a CBI investigation into the matter.
Challenging the role of the state administration, Adhikari questioned, “Why should Mamata Banerjee’s police be used to cover up such massive corruption? This is a national issue. The Election Commission is an autonomous body—why are they not acting on their own?”
Reaffirming BJP's stance, he added, “We won’t let Trinamool win this time by rigging the polls like the previous two times.”
