SVU raids DEO's premises, seizes ₹2.75cr cash & jewellery

SVU raided West Champaran DEO Rajnee Kant Praveen's office and homes, seizing ₹2.75 crore in cash, jewelry, and ₹50 lakh worth of documents in a disproportionate assets case. The cash count suggests illicit gains over 74.3% of his legal income.

Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) teams from Patna carried out raids at multiple locations linked to Rajnee Kant Praveen, the district education officer (DEO) of West Champaran.

The raids took place at his office and house in Bettiah, as well as in Samastipur, Madhubani, and Darbhanga districts. These actions were part of an investigation into a disproportionate assets case.

So far, the SVU has seized Rs 2.75 crore in cash, jewellery, and documents valued at around Rs 50 lakh. Officials said the total cash amount could increase as counting was still ongoing. The cash was so much that the SVU had to call local bank officials with currency-counting machines to help count the money.

According to the SVU, the case appears to involve assets that are over 74.3 per cent more than Praveen's known legal income.

"Praveen is accused of acquiring illegal assets worth at least Rs 1.87 crore, which are far beyond his known income sources. These assets were allegedly acquired since 2005 while he held various government positions in Bihar," said Pankaj Darad, the additional director general (ADG) of the SVU.
