Hyderabad, which is known for its Biryani, has been under the state government’s scanner for eateries flouting food safety norms.

 

A task force of the Food Safety is carrying the task of identifying adulterated food items at restaurants and food-serving establishments.

 

Development in this regard made headlines pertaining to the Rameshwaram café in Hyderabad where expired raw food materials and unhygienic kitchen led to a row. The echoes of which could be heard till now. This is an outlet of the Rameshwaram Café in Bengaluru, which caught people’s attention after a blast took place at its premises.

 

Recently, the Task force of Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, conducted inspections in Punjagutta area in Hyderabad and found several food violations in the premises.

 

As per investigation, few food handlers were found without any valid Food Safety and Standards Authority India (FSSAI) license copy.

 

Other food stall handlers were found without hairnets and uniforms.

In one of the food outlet, few food items including shrimps, toned milk, Chinese chilli paste powder and more items were found expired.

 

Additionally, coffee bean packets were recovered by the task force without any use by date and manufacturer details on it.

 

Moreover, few dustbins too were in extremely bad shape and were not covered with lids.

 

Such raids began since April and had not stopped since then.

 

Who is the man behind this initiative?

 

IAS officer RV Karnan who got posted as the food safety commissioner at Telangana’s Food Safety Department has inspected 129 restaurants, pubs and eateries in Hyderabad and issued 90 show cause notices.

 

Starting from school canteens to hostel messes to well-known eateries, pubs and fine-dining restaurants, Karnan is going to every place where food is prepared.

 

The idea behind this is to ensure that people in Hyderabad can feel safe while eating food from outside establishments.

 

This initiative has made Karnan a known name across the city’s high-end restaurants and popular eateries.

 

Karnan’s task force is, unequivocally, sending chills to those into the food business.

 

Rameshwaram Cafe, Shah Ghouse, Pista House, Taco Bell, Baskin Robbins, La Pino’s Pizza, Paradise Food Court, Baahubali Kitchen were among the popular restaurants that failed to pass muster.

 

Karnan even raided the warehouses of delivery apps.

 

His task force is on the mission to provide quality and hygienic food, and create awareness among the public about food quality and standards.

 

As Telangana’s National Health Mission (NHM) director and its food safety commissioner, Karnan wants to change people’s mindset that restaurant kitchens will always be unhygienic.
