In a major development for Telangana politics, Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar on Wednesday dismissed disqualification petitions against five out of the ten BRS MLAs who had reportedly defected to the ruling Congress. The decision, delivered in open court, specifically cleared Tellam Venkat Rao, Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy, T Prakash Goud, Gudem Mahipal Reddy, and Arekapudi Gandhi.
This move follows a period of intense scrutiny on the Speaker’s office. Just last month, the Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to Kumar for failing to act on these pleas within the timeframe it had previously set. With the Apex Court scheduled to hear the matter again in about four weeks, this ruling appears to be a direct response to that judicial pressure.
While five MLAs have seen their cases settled for now, the fate of the others remains unclear. Of the ten legislators originally served notices following complaints by the BRS, eight have filed their responses. However, two prominent figures — Danam Nagender and Kadiam Srihari — are yet to reply and have asked the Speaker for additional time to submit their explanations.
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi has been pushing hard for these disqualifications. The party argues that the shift to Congress violates anti-defection laws. With half of the petitions now dismissed and the Supreme Court watching the matter closely, the political atmosphere in the state remains tense.
