The Government of Telangana has decided to reintroduce the Breakfast Scheme in all government schools from the 2026–27 academic year Announcing the decision at a high-level education policy review, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said that every student would be provided breakfast along with milk. Milk procurement will be undertaken through Vijaya Dairy.
The chief minister directed officials to adopt technology-based systems to monitor calorie intake levels and ensure nutritional standards are maintained. The breakfast initiative was originally launched by the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government led by K Chandrashekar Rao.
Officially titled the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, it was introduced on October 6, 2023, and rolled out statewide on October 24 during the Dasara festival period.
The scheme aimed to provide free, nutritious breakfast to students from Classes 1 to 10 in government schools, benefiting an estimated 20 to 23 lakh students across nearly 43,000 schools. The menu included items such as idli with sambar, pongal and upma, with two rotating options offered daily. The programme had an annual budget allocation of approximately ₹400 crore.
After the Congress government assumed office in December 2023, the scheme was discontinued, prompting criticism from BRS leaders. The present administration has now decided to revive the initiative with certain modifications.
At Thursday’s review meeting, held at the Command Control Centre, the chief minister also directed that comprehensive school kits be distributed to all students from the coming academic year, in addition to uniforms and textbooks.
The proposed kit will include a schoolbag, pens, pencils, sharpeners, colour pencils, a geometry box, a dictionary, shoes and socks. Officials have been instructed to ensure the necessary budgetary allocations for the implementation of the programme.
