The Telangana government has agreed to increase the stipends of junior doctors by 15 per cent to avert an indefinite strike scheduled to start on Monday. After the state government sanctioned its demands and declared the hike in stipend, Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA) cancelled its planned strike scheduled from June 30.

With the hike, medical and dental interns will be paid ₹29,792 every month, increasing from ₹25,906. First-year PG doctors will receive ₹67,032, second-year ₹70,757, and final-year ₹74,782. For Super Speciality students, stipends increase to ₹1,06,461 in the first year, ₹1,11,785 in the second, and ₹1,17,103 in the third year. The GO also increases the honorarium of senior residents from ₹92,575 to ₹1,06,461.

The stalemate between the junior doctors and the health department, which revolved around outstanding stipends and a demand for a raise, was settled after Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha sat down with T-JUDA representatives and agreed to a raise, clearance of outstanding dues and payment of stipends regularly. He also directed that these new stipends are remitted by the 10th of every month. A Budget Release Order (BRO) has been released to facilitate payments during the year, and all arrears on stipend have been settled. Moreover, the Finance Department released a GO to renew the contracts of senior residents, assistant professors, and other employees for a year, so they can receive regular pay. He further said that the government will resolve infrastructure and faculty issues.

T-JUDA had previously issued an indefinite strike from June 30 in all the 34 government medical colleges in the state due to a lack of response from the health authorities. The Telangana Senior Doctors Association (T-SRDA) had also issued a notification for an indefinite strike from July 1 due to pending dues.
