Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said Tamil Nadu is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
Speaking at an event organised by the Chennai Citizens’ Forum, she dismissed claims that the Central government had neglected Tamil Nadu in funding. She highlighted that several major projects were progressing at different stages across the state.
“Tamil Nadu has been the largest beneficiary under the PLI scheme in electronics, electronic parts, and automobiles,” she stated.
The state has received the highest number of approvals in these sectors. Of the 27 companies approved by the Centre, seven are based in Tamil Nadu. Nearly a quarter of all firms benefiting from the scheme are located in the state.

Tamil Nadu is also home to one of India’s two major electronic parts manufacturing clusters, with the other in Gujarat. To support this sector, the Centre has allocated ₹1,100 crore to develop the cluster in Tamil Nadu.
Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently visited Zetwerk near Chennai. He announced that two electronic parts manufacturing clusters worth ₹1,112 crore would be developed near the city.
Sitharaman also highlighted Tamil Nadu’s strong presence in the automobile and auto component sectors. The state is the second-largest recipient of PLI incentives in this industry. Of the 82 approved applications, 46 are from Tamil Nadu. The state has also secured approvals for four companies under the PLI scheme for advanced chemistry cell battery manufacturing.
Apart from manufacturing, the Central government has backed Tamil Nadu’s energy sector. The Centre has sanctioned ₹7,453 crore under the Viability Gap Funding Scheme for offshore wind energy projects in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
“The country’s first Green Hydrogen Hub Port is being planned at Tuticorin with the Centre’s support,” Sitharaman added.
She also spoke about infrastructure development in the state. Around 1,303 kilometres of new railway lines have been added. The government is committed to further improving connectivity and transport networks.
Sitharaman dismissed allegations that the Centre was ignoring Tamil Nadu. She stressed that several projects were already benefiting the state, and many more were in progress. She urged political leaders to acknowledge these developments rather than spread misinformation.
