The second edition of the International Tawang Marathon took place on Thursday in the breathtaking high-altitude town of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, coinciding with United Nations Day.
Organised collaboratively by the Arunachal Pradesh government and the Indian Army, this year's marathon drew an impressive 4,580 participants, including 1,199 women, from across India and two foreign nations.
A standout moment was the participation of an 80-year-old runner from Mumbai, exemplifying the event’s inclusivity and appeal across generations.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu and the General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps graced the event, joining the runners to underscore the spirit of unity and collaboration inherent in the marathon.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas, the challenging course tested the endurance of participants as they navigated steep inclines and descents.
The pristine landscape of Tawang along the route provided an unforgettable experience for all involved.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Tawang Marathon significantly boosted the local economy. The influx of thousands of participants and visitors positively impacted local businesses, particularly in tourism and hospitality, while showcasing Tawang’s potential as a world-class adventure tourism destination. The event also offered visitors a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Monpa community.
Moreover, the marathon fostered stronger ties between the local population, the Indian Army, and the government, reinforcing the deep bonds shared among them.
