In a real-life movie scene, a teacher alerted the district child protection services and the police, and saved his Class 8 female student from an already married 40-year-old man. The incident was reported in Telangana's Ranga Reddy district, where a teacher rescued a girl student from child marriage.
When the girl told her teacher about the incident, the teacher immediately informed Inspector Prasad and Tahsildar Rajeshwar, who then helped rescue the child. For the girl's protection and assistance, she has been transferred to a Sakhi Centre. Prawin Kumar, the district child protection officer, told a media house that she is receiving counselling.
Providing more details on the incident, Inspector Prasad cited, "The girl lives with her mother and brother. The mother told the house owner where they lived on rent, that she wanted to marry off her daughter. A mediator brought the alliance of the 40-year-old man, and the 'marriage' happened in May. The man, wife, girl's mother, mediator, and a priest who conducted the illegal wedding were charged under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act."
The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act penalises having sex with a minor. Even though the state government has implemented several measures to curb child marriage, the incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing problem in the state.
