A school teacher was shot dead on the and Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) campus on Wednesday night, sparking fear and outrage.
Rao Danish Ali, 43, an AMU alumnus, had stepped out for a stroll in the evening along with two colleagues when he was approached by two masked men on a two-wheeler. The attackers allegedly threatened the trio before opening fire on Danish, who was shot at least three times, including twice in the head. The assailants fled the scene immediately.
Danish collapsed on the spot and was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College by university staff and locals, but declared brought dead by doctors.
The incident is said to have taken place around 8.50 p.m. near the canteen behind the Maulana Azad Library on the esteemed educational university campus where Danish had been teaching at the university-run ABK School for the past 11 years.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Neeraj Jadon, confirmed that both attackers had fired at the victim.
The AMU Proctor, Mohd Wasim Ali said the university received information about the shooting around 9 pm. “We were informed that a teacher from ABK School had been shot near the library and taken to the medical college. Sadly, he did not survive,” he said.
While local police and forensic teams are searching for clues along with a dog squad, CCTV footage is also being scoured to identify the attackers and track their entry and exit points.
A case has been registered based on initial complaint, and further investigation is underway as fear runs amok on the campus.
