A 15-year-old boy reportedly died by suicide at his home in a village in Himachal Pradesh after he was allegedly distressed over failing to clear one subject in the Class 10 board exams, according to police on Monday.
The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) had announced the Class 10 results on Sunday. The overall pass percentage this year stood at 83.87. The deceased has been identified as Aman Kumar, a student of Government High School, Thathal Jungle. According to initial investigation, he was under stress after receiving a ‘compartment’ in one subject, which required him to reappear for the exam.
The police stated that Aman was alone at his residence when the results were announced on Sunday. His father had gone out for daily wage work, while his mother had gone to attend some function.
Police said that after learning about the compartment result, Aman locked his room from inside and allegedly hanged himself using a noose tied to the ceiling.
When his mother came back home in the afternoon, she found the door locked from inside. Despite repeatedly calling out to him, there was no response.
She got suspicious and looked through a window and saw Aman hanging inside the room. She immediately alerted neighbours, following which the matter was reported to the Talai police station.
A police team reached the spot, took custody of the body, and began investigation proceedings. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police said that, prima facie, the case appears to be suicide. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Ghumarwin) Vishal Verma said. Verma further said that further investigation is underway.
