A 17-year-old school student was stabbed to death during a scuffle with another student at the bustling Dakshineswar Metro Station on Thursday afternoon. The incident has raised questions over Metro security, as one of the attackers managed to enter the station premises with a knife in his bag.
Preliminary investigation by police revealed the incident was a fallout of a love triangle involving the deceased, the attacker and a minor girl. “Three common friends of the victim and the accused have been interrogated, and they disclosed about a girl’s role in the scuffle. It seems the attack was deliberate as the accused, also a minor, was carrying the knife in his bag,” said a police officer.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 2:30 pm when a group of school students entered the station.
“After descending from the platform to the second floor, an argument broke out near a food stall. The altercation soon turned violent, and during the scuffle, one student allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed another in the stomach,” said a police officer, adding, “As the victim collapsed on the floor, his friends carried him down the back staircase of the second floor and rushed him to hospital.”
The victim was a student of Class XI of a school in north Kolkata’s Bagbazar area and the attacker is also a student of the same school.
Commuters described a chilling sight inside the station, with bloody footprints scattered across the floor. The RPF and Dakshineswar police immediately cordoned off the area.
The police said the injured student was first taken to nearby Sagar Dutta Hospital, but as his condition worsened, he was shifted to SSKM Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite desperate efforts to save him.
“We have launched an investigation into the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage from the Metro Station. We are yet to trace the accused student,” said another police officer.
Authorities are also probing how the weapon was carried into the station despite tight security checks, with many questioning the efficiency of existing screening measures.
