A 24-year-old man was killed early on Thursday in Mumbai's Goregaon area when a speeding SUV, driven by a 17-year-old boy, crashed into his bike, police said.

The teenage driver was arrested, and a case has been registered against him and two others, including the SUV owner.

The victim, Navin Vaishnaw, was delivering milk when a Mahindra Scorpio, coming from the wrong side, collided with his two-wheeler around 4 am. The SUV then hit an electric pole.

The teenage driver attempted to flee the scene but was injured and subsequently apprehended by the police.

Case registered against three

Police were alerted to the accident and rushed to the scene. Vaishnaw was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A case has been filed against the 17-year-old driver, the SUV’s owner, Iqbal Jivani (48), and his son Mohammed Faz Iqbal Jivani (21), according to the police.

The vehicle was seized, and the accused, including the minor, were arrested with the help of CCTV footage, a police official stated.

Blood samples from the teenage driver have been sent for analysis to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Authorities are also investigating whether the teenager and his friends had been partying before the accident.

The tragic incident in Mumbai echoes a similar crash in Pune earlier this year.

On May 19, a 17-year-old allegedly drunk driver crashed a Porsche into a bike, killing two IT engineers, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta.

The teenager in that case was controversially granted bail shortly after, under conditions such as writing an essay on road safety. He was later sent to an observation home until June 5.
