Tejashwi Yadav, leader of the Opposition in the Bihar assembly, has been named the working president of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) at the party’s national executive meeting held on Sunday.

The 36-year-old younger son of RJD chief, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, had fought and lost the recent assembly polls held in the state late last year, in which he was the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial candidate.

In a post on X, the RJD said the decision, which makes clear the line of succession in the party, was taken at its national executive meeting that was attended by Yadav, Prasad and other senior leaders.

Tejashwi, a former deputy chief minister of Bihar, had appeared confident on Saturday of his elevation in the party despite competition from his elder sister, Patliputra MP Misa Bharti, who is also said to have been eyeing the party post. Bharti was present at the party meeting on Sunday.

Yadav’s other elder sister, Rohini Acharya, had a fall out with her family recently, when she accused her brother and his close aides, including Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav, for the poll debacle. She claimed to have been insulted and abused by her family and asked that accountability for the party’s loss in the elections be fixed.

Meanwhile, factions in the family became apparent last year too, when Yadav’s elder brother, Tej Pratap Yadav, was expelled from the party by his father.

Tej Pratap, who had made his political debut along with Tejashwi in 2015, then floated his own outfit, Janshakti Janta Dal, which also failed to make an impact in the polls.

Tejashwi is now said to be all set to take on the new post, having told workers at the RJD office on Saturday that he was thinking of revamping the party structure from the booth level.
