The stage is set for a major local political showdown in Telangana as the State Election Commission officially dropped the schedule for municipal polls this Tuesday. In a move that puts the state into high gear, the Commission announced that voting will take place on February 11, with the results to be declared just two days later on February 13.
The window for candidates to jump into the fray is remarkably tight. The nominations are expected to open on Wednesday, January 28, and will close by January 30. After a review of the documents on January 31, the nominees can decide until February 3 that whether they wish to contest or withdraw their nomination.
With the notification now public, the Model Code of Conduct has officially kicked in across the state. This means the usual freeze on new government schemes and major policy announcements is in effect, ensuring a level playing field for the 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations up for grabs.
The Commission has emphasised that its teams are already on the ground making arrangements to handle the logistics of such a massive exercise. From securing polling stations to managing the counting centres, the goal is to keep the entire process peaceful and transparent.
