The number of fatalities caused by the explosion at a chemical plant in Telangana went up to 42 on Tuesday.
The count was 12 on Monday. "As many as 31 bodies have been recovered from under the debris, while three succumbed to injuries in the hospital. The final leg of the rescue operation is still underway," District Superintendent of Police Paritosh Pankaj said.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy visited the explosion site on Tuesday and stated that his government would approach the management of Sigachi Industries Ltd, so that a compensation of ₹1 crore is given to the families of those who lost their lives in the explosion at the pharma factory in Pashamylaram.
The CM further announced that those seriously injured would be given ₹10 lakh in compensation, while those with minor injuries will be paid ₹5 lakh. "The state government will discuss with the company management that ₹1 crore each would be given to the families of those deceased," the CM said.
Most of the victims were from Odisha, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.
A reactor explosion caused a blast and fire at the Sigachi Chemical Industry in Pashamylaram on Monday. State health minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, briefing the media, said about 90 workers were present in the factory when the accident took place.
"The explosion tore the industrial shed to pieces and the impact of the blast was so powerful that a few of the workers were even lifted up in the air, landing almost 100 metres away," he added. Rescue and firefighting operations were conducted at the plant after the explosion, during which 10 bodies were retrieved.
Meanwhile Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma also mourned the tragic accident. Offering condolences to the families of those who died in the blast, the state Governor wished a quick recovery to those injured.
The Governor also met the Labour, Employment Training and Factories (LETF) Principal Secretary M. Dan Kishore, and instructed him to provide all possible support and assistance to the victims.
