Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing early signs of an impending heatwave as temperatures on Saturday climbed 7.8 degrees Celsius above normal, settling at 31.7 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, officials said on Sunday.
The Meteorological office in Srinagar said the summer capital witnessed one of the hottest days of the season on Saturday and warned of a potential heatwave in the coming days. The mercury touched 30 degrees Celsius for the first time this year in February and crossed 31 degrees on Saturday.
Besides Srinagar, several places in South Kashmir, including Qazigund, also recorded 31 degrees Celsius, which was approximately 7.8 degrees above normal.
The tourist resort of Pahalgam registered 25.2 degrees Celsius (4.5 degrees above normal), while Kokernag recorded 28.6 degrees Celsius.
In North Kashmir, Sopore remained the hottest with 32.1 degrees Celsius, while central Kashmir’s Budgam recorded 28.7 degrees Celsius.
In the Jammu division, the daytime temperature reached 35.1 degrees Celsius, which was 1.7 degrees below normal.
The MeT has predicted that dry weather conditions are likely to persist in the region, though chances of light rainfall accompanied by gusty winds may occur at scattered places in J&K.
