The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) in Manipur has retracted its appeal urging government employees to skip work, following violence that erupted in Churachandpur district over the suspension of a head constable.

In a late-night statement on Monday, the ITLF declared an immediate end to the closure of government offices, acknowledging the impact on the public. This announcement comes after thin attendance was recorded in Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts on Monday due to the boycott call.

While acknowledging that their demands for reinstatement of the suspended head constable and removal of the district SP and DC remain unmet, the ITLF expressed concern for the safety of the officials who defied their orders to leave the district. "They are now responsible for their own safety and security," the statement noted.

Furthermore, the ITLF distanced itself from the violence that occurred at the government complex on February 15th, calling it "unforeseen" and urging restraint from such actions in the future. "Anyone who engages in such hostile behaviour... will have to bear the repercussions on their own," the statement warned.

The incident stemmed from the suspension of head constable Siamlalpaul, following a viral video showcasing his presence alongside armed men. This move sparked tension, culminating in a mob storming the government complex, resulting in arson and vandalism.

Two individuals lost their lives, and 30 were injured during the clash with security forces.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the violence and initiated an FIR against an individual threatening the SP's life.

The CM emphasised the restoration of the damaged DC bungalow and questioned the underlying motives behind the unrest. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident thoroughly and submit a report within 30 days.
