An unnamed militant and a soldier were killed during a nighttime confrontation in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, according to officials on Wednesday.
A few days ago, the Army and police initiated an operation against terrorism in the Lolab area of Kupwara after receiving intelligence regarding potential militant activities, stated the officials.
As per their accounts, security forces made contact with the concealed militants on Tuesday, resulting in a confrontation.
"Based on specific input regarding presence of terrorists in general area Kowut, Kupwara, a Joint Search Operation was launched by #IndianArmy and @JmuKmrPolice on days leading up to 23 July 24," the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps posted on X.
It said suspicious movements were noticed on Tuesday, and the suspects were challenged by vigilant troops. In response, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire, leading to a gunbattle.
"In the ensuing firefight, one terrorist has been eliminated and an NCO injured. Operation is in progress," the Army added on the microblogging platform.
The officials said the injured soldier later succumbed to his injuries.
So far in this month alone, J&K has reported several terror-related incidents; 5 army soldiers lost their lives, and several others have been injured.
