This remote hamlet in Maharashtra's Thane waited for 78 years to get the basic necessity of electricity. The hamlet located in tribal-dominated Shahapur taluka of Maharashtra's Thane district received electricity for the first time, triggering joyous celebrations among its residents.
A senior official with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL or Mahavitaran), Kalyan region, said a new 63 KVA transformer has been installed in the hamlet, Varaswadi, and it became operational on Thursday (September 18).
The homes will now get a power supply and street lights for the first time. The largely tribal inhabitants were ecstatic when power was restored. Its main village, Fugale, is 3.5km away from Varaswadi, a small settlement of only 60 people.
"Today, our village has got new enthusiasm as it got electricity for the first time. The darkness has gone away, and now development of the village will accelerate along with the education of our children," said local resident Rama Aghan.
When their houses finally came to light, the villagers cheered loudly and broke out crackers.
The locals expressed gratitude to a tribal organisation that visited the settlement in 2020 with office-bearers and members and launched a persistent effort to connect to the electrical grid.
