The Punjab Police are finding it tough to get to the bottom of the threat mails to blow up the Golden Temple with the senders using a complex maze of darknet and Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Highly placed police sources said they had approached a US-based software company for help in identifying the origin of these mails, and they were awaiting the firm’s response.

Dark net is a network within the Internet which can only be accessed with specific software, configurations and authorisation. Apart from the Golden Temple, which has received nine threatening emails, many religious, historical and other places of strategic importance in the country have received similar threats in recent months.

Three days ago, Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport in Amritsar had received threats of an RDX blast, after which the Central Industrial Security Force and Punjab Police intensified the security at the airport. Another threat was received on blowing up the Nanakjhira Gurdwara in Bidar, Karnataka on July 18.

The police said all threatening emails had similar content as the sender had repeatedly raised issues pertaining to the people of Tamil Nadu and criticised the Tamil Nadu government. “We suspect that the emails were sent from Tamil Nadu, but this is yet to be substantiated with technical evidence,” said a senior police officer.

“The cyber and technical investigations spanning other states make it a complicated and time-consuming process,” Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said.
