Three coaches of the Ujjaini Express derailed near Yog Nagari railway station in Rishikesh while the train was going towards the railway yard, according to officials on Tuesday.
There were no passengers on board at the time of the incident, which took place around 9:40 pm on Monday near the Khand Gaon area, officials added.
The train, which runs between Lakshmibai Nagar in Indore and Yog Nagari in Rishikesh, had reached at Yog Nagari railway station at 6 pm on Monday and was about to leave for its return journey at 6:15 am on Tuesday. They added that the incident took place when the train was being shifted from the platform to the railway yard.
The locomotive hit the buffer (dead end) at the end of the shunting line, causing pressure on the coaches. As a result, one coach jumped off the track, while another got bent in the middle. Three coaches were damaged in the incident.
Officials added that train services were not affected and normal rail operations continued without disruption. Railway workers have detached the damaged coaches from the train.
Yog Nagari railway station manager Surendra Kumar Sharma said efforts are underway to bring the two passenger coaches back on track with the help of a crane. He added that an inquiry has been ordered to find out the exact cause of the incident.
A large crowd gathered near the tracks after the accident, after which teams from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) controlled the situation.
