Heavy rains continued across parts of Uttarakhand on Monday, leaving three people dead and causing widespread disruption, officials said.
One individual was swept away by the strong currents of the Bhakhra stream near Haldwani on Monday. A day earlier, two others drowned in a swollen stream near Bhujiyaghat on the Haldwani road.
In Rudraprayag district, a landslide caused by overnight rains buried two shops under falling boulders and debris, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre.
Dehradun saw heavy rains through the night. As a precaution, the district administration closed all schools and anganwadi centres for the day. Several major rivers, including the Ganga in Haridwar and the Kali, were flowing above normal levels.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in Nainital, Champawat, and Bageshwar for Monday and Tuesday. Alerts have also been issued for Udham Singh Nagar, Pauri, and Dehradun on Tuesday.
In Udham Singh Nagar, flood-like conditions prevailed on Sunday as the Levda river and nearby streams swelled. Families in Indra Colony on the Rampur–Nainital road and in villages like Chakarpur, Lakhanpur, Muriya Pistor, and Barhaini were affected.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a virtual meeting with district magistrates, urging them to stay on the ground with their teams. He asked officials to make advance preparations for waterlogging and assess crop damage from the rains quickly.
