Three persons were injured and 12 more houses were damaged after overnight rain in the Boh Valley of Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, officials said on Wednesday.
The latest damage has taken the total number of affected houses in the valley to 18. Six houses were swept away during heavy rain on Tuesday.
The weather department has warned of a low to moderate risk of flash floods in parts of Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur and Kullu districts in the next 24 hours.
A cloudburst on Tuesday caused flash floods and huge flows of mud and debris in Sapedi and Garun villages. Lam village is also considered vulnerable. Several roads leading to these areas have been affected.
Officials said 13 concrete houses and five mud houses have been damaged in the rain. Three people were injured, while nine cowsheds were also affected. Three buffaloes, four cows, one bull and one sheep were killed.
Residents reportedly heard a loud, explosion-like sound from the hills shortly before a strong rush of water, mud and boulders came down the slopes. Officials believe that the timely evacuation of residents helped prevent any loss of life.
The Shimla Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for isolated areas of Kangra and Mandi, warning of heavy to very heavy rain on Wednesday. A yellow alert has also been issued for parts of Chamba, Kullu, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur.
The weather office has also warned of a low to moderate possibility of flash floods in some watersheds and local areas of Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur and Kullu during the next 24 hours. The rainy spell is expected to continue in the state until July 27.
Officials said landslides have also occurred in the Dibba and Maned Nallah areas. The damage has made it difficult for rescue teams and government officials to reach the affected locations.
Heavy rain over the past few days has also led to the closure of several roads across Himachal Pradesh.
Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers, streams, nullahs and slopes prone to landslides. People have also been warned against crossing flooded roads or overflowing bridges.
