The Delhi Police Special Cell has apprehended three more workers of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) from Himachal Pradesh linked to the controversial 'shirtless protest' held during the AI Impact Summit.
According to the Delhi Police, the arrested workers—Saurabh, Arbaaz and Siddharth—were picked up from Shimla. They are residents of Amethi, Sultanpur and Rewa, respectively. Police said they had escaped earlier and were hiding in Himachal Pradesh. Of the three, two were present at the protest venue, while one was allegedly involved in planning the protest. Saurabh, Siddharth and Arbaaz were arrested by the Special Cell from a hotel in the Rohru subdivision of Shimla district.
Dr Anu Barwal, Medical Officer at Ambala Civil Hospital, said Delhi Police brought the three accused for medical examination. “Their medical check-up was conducted at Civil Hospital, Ambala. Their condition is stable,” she said. The arrests come days after members of the Indian Youth Congress staged a protest at Bharat Mandapam during the AI Impact India Summit in Delhi. The protesters removed their shirts and displayed slogans reading 'Compromised PM'.
Earlier on Thursday morning, a Delhi Police team left from the Shoghi barrier with the three accused after a local court granted transit remand. Officials said Shimla Police later released all the detained vehicles, allowing Delhi Police to leave with the accused and the seized material.
A Delhi Police personnel said the team has departed from the Shoghi barrier after handing over the seizure memo to Shimla Police. He said the officials have taken the DVR and the seized vehicle along, and will produce the accused before a local magistrate in Delhi.
He further claimed there was an argument at the spot over the detention of their vehicle by Shimla Police. “Questions were raised on how Shimla Police was trying to seize our vehicle under the law. After detaining our vehicles for some time, they finally released them,” he said.
Earlier this week, Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib and former national spokesperson Bhudev Sharma were also arrested in connection with the case.
