Three Kanwar pilgrims were killed and three others sustained serious injuries after a speeding Bolero vehicle collided head-on with a truck on the Chaudhary Charan Singh Kanwar Route in Ghaziabad’s Niwari police station area in Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Wednesday.
The victims, all residents of Kalgaon village in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, were travelling to Haridwar for a holy dip in the Ganga and darshan when the accident occurred. The family had recently purchased the pickup vehicle.
Upon receiving information, police officials from the Niwari police station, along with Modinagar ACP Bhaskar Verma, rushed to the scene. The bodies were extricated from the mangled vehicle and sent for post-mortem examination, while the injured were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The deceased have been identified as Ramesh, Ratan, and Sujit. According to preliminary investigation, overspeeding appears to be the primary cause of the crash. Police have seized the truck involved in the accident and taken its driver and helper into custody.
“Ghaziabad Police Commissionerate received information regarding a collision between a Bolero pickup and a truck in the Niwari police station area. Upon reaching the spot, it was found that three people had died and several others were injured. The injured were rushed to hospital for primary treatment,” Verma said.
He added that the victims were heading to Haridwar in their newly purchased vehicle when the tragic accident occurred. “Police have taken the truck, its driver and conductor into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway,” he said.
Notably, diversion of heavy vehicles on the Chaudhary Charan Singh Kanwar Route was scheduled to come into effect from the morning of July 29. However, the accident occurred before the diversion was implemented.
The Chaudhary Charan Singh Kanwar Route is one of the busiest corridors during the annual Kanwar Yatra, witnessing lakhs of devotees of Lord Shiva undertaking the pilgrimage, often on foot, to collect holy water from the Ganga.
