A tragic road accident on National Highway-16 in Howrah’s Uluberia claimed the lives of a man and his two minor children on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the woman accompanying them critically injured.
The deceased have been identified as Sheikh Siraj (35), his son Sheikh Hiraj (7), and daughter Sanjana Khatun (4). Siraj’s wife, Samina Begum, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment in a Kolkata hospital.
Police said the incident took place when the family was on their way to attend a hearing related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the state.
According to local sources and eyewitnesses, the family was traveling on a motorcycle when a four-wheeler suddenly came in front of them near the Uluberia checkpoint. In an attempt to avoid the car, Siraj lost control of the bike, which then rammed into the rear of a truck moving ahead on the highway. The impact was severe, killing Siraj and the two children on the spot.

Police from Uluberia police station, with the assistance of local residents, rushed to the scene and rescued all four victims. Samina Begum, who was found in a critical condition, was first admitted to Uluberia Sub-Divisional Hospital. She was later shifted to a hospital in Kolkata for advanced treatment.
Police have seized the motorcycle and the four-wheeler involved in the accident. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact sequence of events and determine responsibility.
