Three minor girls drowned after being swept away by strong currents at a waterfall in Alluri Sitaramaraju district of Andhra Pradesh, officials said.
The incident occurred on Thursday when four girls from Jambhuvalasa village in Hukumpeta Mandal had gone on an outing to the Mulagummi waterfalls in Ananthagiri Mandal.
According to sources, while one of the girls was recording a video, the other three entered the water to bathe. One of them allegedly slipped and was pulled away by the strong current. In an attempt to rescue her, the second girl jumped in, followed by a third. However, all three were overpowered by the force of the water and drowned.
The fourth girl, who was filming, also rushed to help but fell into the water. She was later rescued in an unconscious condition and shifted to a hospital in Lungaparthi. Doctors have stated that her condition is stable.
Officials said that all the deceased had recently appeared for their intermediate examinations.
Locals reported that no one else was present at the spot when the incident took place. The tragedy came to light when another girl, who was supposed to accompany them, arrived at the location and found them missing.
Family members and villagers are in deep shock following the incident. “They had gone out happily. None of us imagined it would end like this,” a relative said.
