The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement, though over 5 lakh people across 17 districts continue to grapple with the aftermath, official sources said on Tuesday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the situation, assuring him of all possible assistance from the Centre.

CM Sarma also received a call from Odisha's Chief Minister, who offered the use of his state’s disaster management system to help mitigate the challenges.

Governor of Assam, Gulab Chand Kataria, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to update him on the flood situation.

A source from Raj Bhavan stated that the Prime Minister reiterated the Centre's commitment to support Assam in its flood mitigation and rehabilitation efforts.

Currently, over 5,11,000 people are affected by the floods in the districts of Cachar, Kamrup, Dhubri, Morigaon, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Karimganj, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, Nalbari, Darrang, Kamrup Metropolitan, Biswanath, Jorhat, and Majuli.

This is a slight improvement from Sunday when 5.97 lakh people were impacted.

Cachar remains the worst-hit district, with over 1.08 lakh people affected, followed by Dhubri with 81,000, and Nagaon with more than 76,000. The state has set up more than 100 relief camps, sheltering nearly 25,000 displaced individuals.

Additionally, around 4,000 people are receiving aid from 12 relief distribution centres.

The death toll from this year’s floods, lightning, and storms stands at 112, with three fatalities reported on Monday.

Major rivers such as the Brahmaputra continue to flow above the danger mark at several locations, including Nematighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri. Other rivers like the Burhidihing at Khowang and the Disang at Nanglamuraghat are also above safe levels.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma mentioned briefing the Union Home Minister about the flood situation and expressed gratitude for the Centre’s ongoing support. Shah reaffirmed the commitment to providing all necessary assistance from the Government of India to help Assam manage the crisis.

Odisha CM Mohan Majhi also extended his support during a phone call with Sarma, offering the expertise of Odisha's disaster management system to assist in flood mitigation.

"On behalf of the people of Assam, I have conveyed our heartfelt gratitude for his concern. We agreed to remain in touch in case we require any such assistance," Sarma posted.
