On Wednesday morning, while returning to Phulia on a motorcycle via National Highway, the accident occurred near the Churni Bridge in Ranaghat.

In a tragic turn of events, a road accident in Ranaghat has claimed the lives of three members of the same family, barely a day after another fatal mishap shook the area of Nadia district.

The victims — Sujal Ghosh, his wife Chhaya Ghosh, and their five-year-old son — were residents of Phuliapara in the Nimtala area, under the Phulia-Belgharia No. 1 Gram Panchayat within the jurisdiction of Shantipur Police Station.

According to local sources, the family had travelled to Bongaon on Tuesday to attend a wedding at a relative’s home. On Wednesday morning, while returning to Phulia on a motorcycle via National Highway, the accident occurred near the Churni Bridge in Ranaghat.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 16-wheeled lorry struck the motorcycle from behind, causing the rider to lose control. The bike subsequently slid underneath the heavy vehicle, leading to a catastrophic impact. The motorcycle was left completely mangled.

Sujal Ghosh and Chhaya Ghosh died on the spot. Their five-year-old son was rescued in a critical condition and rushed to the Ranaghat Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying sequence of events. Local resident Shyamapada Roy stated that the lorry rammed into the motorcycle from behind, trapping it under its wheels. Another eyewitness, Subhankar Saha, said the family had been returning home after attending a wedding when the accident took place, describing it as “extremely tragic and heartbreaking.”

The incident has intensified public concern, as it comes just one day after another deadly accident on National Highway 12 in Phulia, which left three people dead and at least 15 injured. That earlier mishap reportedly occurred while victims were returning home after offering prayers.

The back-to-back tragedies have sparked outrage among residents, with many raising questions about road safety and traffic regulation on the busy highway stretch.
