Three women were injured in bear attacks in two villages of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, officials said. The incidents were reported from the Shamer and Gadar hamlets in the Mandi area of the border district.
A doctor at the district hospital in Poonch said two of the injured women were brought from Mandi for treatment, while the third woman was being treated at a hospital in Mandi.
The doctor said one of the victims, Nazia Kausar, suffered a serious eye injury and her condition is critical. She is likely to be shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Rajouri for specialised treatment.
The second injured woman is in stable condition and is receiving medical care at the district hospital, the doctor added. The attacks have caused concern among local residents, who said such incidents have become increasingly common in the area.
Mohammad Rafiq, a resident of Tatri village in Bahadur, urged the district administration to provide help to the affected families and take concrete steps to prevent future attacks.
He said similar bear attacks had occurred earlier as well, but the problem had not been properly addressed. He appealed to the deputy commissioner and other officials to support the victims and find a lasting solution to the recurring threat.
Officials said all necessary medical assistance is being provided to the injured women and Nazia Kausar's condition is being closely monitored.
