Three Tibetan settlements in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district have suffered heavy damage from continuous rains since July, a report by the Home Department of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has said.
Several settlements, including Manali Dekyiling, Dobhi Palrabling, and Kullu Yulokoe, have also faced partial damage in recent months, according to the report released on Wednesday.
On August 26, the Fozal drain and the Beas river near Dobhi Palrabling overflowed, triggering mudslides and debris flows that entered around 45 Tibetan homes. Dobhi Palrabling, located on the banks of the Beas and Fozal drain, is about 25 km from both Kullu and Manali.
The report noted that earlier construction of new retaining walls and repairs to old ones by the CTA helped in making sure that residents are safe. After a red alert was issued on August 26 and 27, the settlement office contacted the District Disaster Management Authority, which arranged for people to be moved to safer places.
Heavy rains in Manali on August 27 also caused sand, stones, and trees to fall on several homes in the Manali Dekyiling settlement. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
In the Kullu Yulokoe settlement, the overflowing river entered houses along the banks, damaging a retaining wall, but residents remained safe.
To support those affected, the CTA Home Department has released Rs 4 lakh in emergency relief funds to the Kullu Tibetan Settlement Office for immediate relief and repair work.
