A home guard was killed by a tiger in Assam's Orang National Park on Wednesday evening. The victim, Dhanmoni Deka, was part of a patrol team in the park's Bilpara range when the tiger attacked.
According to Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Pradipta Barua, Deka and a colleague were on foot patrol when the tiger attacked.
The big cat dragged Deka into the forest, prompting the other guard to alert forest officials.
A search operation was launched immediately, with the team firing shots into the air in an attempt to drive the tiger away.
The tiger abandoned Deka’s body upon hearing the gunfire and retreated into the forest.
The body was recovered and sent for postmortem and other formalities.
DFO Barua expressed concern over the tiger’s behaviour, noting that the animal has tasted human blood.
Efforts will be made to identify the tiger through pugmarks and camera traps to implement precautionary measures during future patrols, he informed.
Orang National Park, spanning Darrang and Sonitpur districts, is home to 26 tigers as per the 2022 census.
