Tipra Motha calls for road-rail blockade over Kokborok script issue

The Tipra Motha party intensified pressure on the Tripura government to allow Kokborok language papers in Roman script for class 10 and 12 board exams.



Leader of Opposition Animesh Debbarma urges Chief Minister Manik Saha to provide examinees with this option, while the party’s student wing announces indefinite road-rail blockade from February 12.



Kokborok, spoken by nearly 24% people in Tripura, lacks a script, with students traditionally writing in Bengali. 



Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) mandates Bengali script due to resource constraints.

Tipra Indigenous Students’ Federation (TISF) on Friday called for blockade, demanding Roman script usage. 



TISF president Sajra Debbarma announces indefinite protest until demand is met.

Tipra Motha, with 13 MLAs, vows to continue agitation until written assurance from the CM or the education department on Kokborok in Roman script.



TBSE exams for classes 10 and 12 to commence on March 1. Kokborok, spoken by nine Borok community sub-tribes, comprises nearly 24% of Tripura's population.


The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), also recognized as the Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance, serves as a prominent regional political entity in Tripura, India. Led by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, it formerly operated as a social organization. Presently, it holds the position of the principal opposition party within the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
