Sabyasachi Dutta, the incumbent Chairman of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and a prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was arrested late Monday night by police in connection with serious allegations, including extortion, mental harassment, and issuing death threats.
The arrest was carried out by officers from the Bidhannagar North Police Station following a formal complaint lodged earlier in the day by a local businessman, Madhusudan Chakraborty. In his FIR, the complainant alleged that Dutta extorted Rs 1 crore in cash from him approximately eight years ago, in February 2018.
The businessman further claimed that he was subjected to prolonged mental harassment and was threatened with dire consequences if he chose to speak out against the alleged incident. Acting on the complaint, police initiated swift action and conducted a late-night raid at Dutta’s private residence in a high-rise complex in New Town.
Dutta was initially detained at the scene before being formally arrested later that night.
A seasoned political figure, Dutta had recently contested the Barasat Assembly elections as a TMC candidate. He previously served as the MLA for the Rajarhat–New Town constituency and also held the post of Mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. At the time of his arrest, he was serving as the Councillor for Ward No. 31.
Police sources indicate that Dutta will be produced before the Bidhannagar Court on Tuesday, where investigators are expected to seek custody for further interrogation.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by the Bidhannagar North Police Station regarding the high-profile arrest.
