In a dramatic turn ahead of the May 21 Assembly re-election in Falta, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan — known as ‘Pushpa’ for his filmy dialogue before the Assembly polls — announced his withdrawal from the contest, citing the need to maintain peace and ensure the region’s overall development.
The Election Commission of India ordered a repoll across the entire constituency after complaints of irregularities, including EVM tampering with tapes, surfaced at different polling stations on the day of the election, April 29. The report submitted by the special observer, Subrata Gupta, highlighted gross irregularities and negligence on the part of polling personnel, prompting the Commission to announce a re-poll in Falta.
The unexpected decision, made at the peak of election campaigning in South 24 Parganas, has significantly altered the district's political landscape. Khan called his move a conscious “sacrifice.” He said he wanted to prevent unrest among the people of Falta and prioritise stability over political ambition.
Political observers view the development as a calculated move with both political and legal undertones. The TMC leader had recently secured interim relief from the Calcutta High Court, which granted a stay on his arrest in connection with multiple criminal cases. His withdrawal from the fray, soon after gaining this legal protection, has added to the intrigue.
Despite his reputation among supporters as a leader unlikely to back down under pressure, Khan’s appeal for peace on the eve of polling has triggered intense discussions within political circles. In his statement, he emphasised that he does not wish to see conflict or disorder in Falta and that the development of the constituency remains his foremost priority.
The move is being closely watched by political analysts, who believe it could have a decisive impact on the electoral outcome in Falta. With campaigning concluding and voting imminent, all eyes are now on how this last-minute withdrawal will reshape the contest in the constituency.
