The scheduled meeting of the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) discipline committee in West Bengal Assembly was abruptly canceled on Tuesday, following the intra-party feud within the party MPs. The meeting was supposed to take place in the Assembly, with chairman Shobhandeb Chatterjee having already informed members in advance.

However, on the day of the meeting, Chatterjee personally called the members to notify them of its cancellation, stating that they no longer needed to come to the Assembly.

When questioned about the reason for the cancellation, senior MLA and TMC’s chief whip Nirmal Ghosh said, "The meeting has been canceled for now. We will inform you when it is rescheduled." He refrained from commenting further on the indefinite postponement of such an important meeting.

According to party insiders, the cancellation comes amid unease within the party’s representatives in Lok Sabha following a public spat between Trinamool MPs in Delhi. Senior MP Kalyan Banerjee held a press conference where he openly criticised two fellow MPs, including a woman MP. In response, MP Saugata Roy also publicly voiced his disagreement with Banerjee.

This series of public confrontations has raised serious concerns about internal discipline. A section of the party believes that with MPs themselves flouting party norms and engaging in war or words in public, taking strict action against MLAs for similar breaches would seem hypocritical. Such action might even trigger uncomfortable questions about the discipline and conduct of the MPs themselves.

The Tuesday’s meeting was convened on the backdrop of over 30 MLAs — including Manoj Tiwari and some ministers — being absent from the last two days of the budget session, despite clear instructions from the party’s chief whip to ensure full attendance.

The disciplinary committee had initially hinted at taking action against these absentees, but given the current turmoil, sources reveal that those plans are now on hold.

With tensions running high and party unity under strain, the TMC leadership appears to be treading cautiously, choosing to delay disciplinary measures until the situation stabilises.
