The Trinamool Congress has accused leading Bollywood singer Arijit Singh of “selective criticism” after he released a song demanding justice for the RG Kar victim.
Arijit Singh, who is from West Bengal, released a Bengali song, ‘Aar Kobe’ (If not now, then when?), questioning how long people would remain silent on rape culture while expressing hope that the efforts of Kolkata’s residents would not be futile.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh hits out at the National Award-winning singer and questioned why Singh did not release a similar song demanding justice for the two kindergarten girls who were sexually abused at a school in Maharashtra’s Badlapur.
“Arijit Singh is a wonderful singer. He is also a good human being. His song demanding justice for the victim is justified, I support it,” Ghosh tweeted in Bengali.
“But the problem with Singh is that his consciousness arises only for Bengal. He never releases songs for other incidents like the one that happened in Maharashtra’s Badlapur, or for (wrestler) Sakshi Malik, because he primarily works there (Mumbai). His work, money, and career are associated with the Hindi film industry,” Ghosh further said.
Amid the criticism, the song is being loved by one and all. On YouTube, it was released two days ago, and till now it has garnered 744K views.
Explaining the meaning of the song, Singh said: “This is not simply a protest song, it is a call to action. It is a reminder that our fight for women’s safety and dignity is far from over.”
