TMC leader attacked, killed in Hooghly

Eyewitnesses said that a group of miscreants had been waiting for the victim.

Tension gripped Kanaipur on Wednesday night after a brutal attack claimed the life of a local TMC leader on Hooghly district, Pintu Chakraborty, also known as Munna. The incident occurred near the Kanaipur auto stand, a bustling market area on Konnagar, as Pintu was leaving his gas agency office to return home.

 

Eyewitnesses said that a group of miscreants had been waiting for the victim.

 

“As Pintu stepped out of his office, he was attacked with a large stone and other sharp weapons. Even after he collapsed, the attackers continued the assault in full view of onlookers. After the committing the crime, the attackers fled away. Locals rushed him to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where he succumbed to his injuries,” said a police officer.

 

Pintu, the current president of the Kanaipur Business Association, was also involved in real estate and gas agency businesses. A large police contingent from the Kanaipur outpost and Uttarpara police station arrived promptly at the scene. Deputy Commissioner of Police of Serampore, Arnab Biswas, said, “It is still unclear why the attack took place. Two miscreants attacked him with sharp weapons. We are in the early stages of investigation and are examining CCTV footage to identify the attackers.”

Commissioner of Chandernagore police commissionerate Amit Javalgi is personally overseeing the investigation. The police are also probing whether any suspects were present in the nearby liquor shop, which often sees a gathering of locals and outsiders in the evenings. Shivchandra Dey, Secretary of the Kanaipur Business Association, said, “Pintu was attacked right outside his office. One of his hands was severed. The business community is terrified."

 

TMC’s block president Nikhil Chakraborty, said, "Pintu was supposed to attend a meeting with the party leadership. Suddenly, I heard about the attack. He was a good person. I can't comprehend why something like this happened. We are in touch with the police and awaiting updates."

 

The gruesome murder has sparked widespread concern, with residents and political leaders demanding swift action. The motive behind the attack remains unknown and police have assured a thorough investigation.
