Tension escalated in Kolkata’s adjoining Bhangar area after local TMC leader Rajjak Khan was shot dead on Thursday night. The incident took place when Khan was attacked by unidentified miscreants while returning home. The police have so far arrested two persons in connection with the killing.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of assailants on motorcycles ambushed Khan and opened fire. To ensure his death, they also stabbed him with sharp weapons. Khan was rushed to a local hospital in a critically injured state, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Allegations have surfaced regarding the motive behind the killing. Some point to internal sectarian conflict, while others suspect the involvement of opposition forces. Investigators are examining CCTV footages from the area where the incident took place.
Party insiders say Rajjak Khan was a close associate of Trinamool MLA Shawkat Mollah of the Canning East constituency and held key positions in the party’s regional structure. Local residents and party workers believe his growing popularity and active political role may have made him a target.

Following the incident, Bhangar and surrounding areas witnessed widespread unrest. Supporters of the TMC took to the streets, demanding swift action and the immediate arrest of those responsible. Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain order. Reacting sharply to the incident, MLA Shawkat Mollah accused the Indian Secular Front (ISF) of orchestrating the murder.
“Razjak was returning home after attending two meetings. This was a planned assassination. Miscreants backed by ISF are behind it. We demand the administration take immediate action and bring the culprits to justice,” he said. The ISF has denied all allegations and held the ruling TMC’s intra-party feud responsible for the incident.
