The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) against Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, accusing him of attempting to influence the election process and intimidate government officials involved in electoral duties.
The ruling party has alleged that in a recent media interaction, Adhikari made threatening remarks directed at Booth Level Officers (BLOs) — key personnel responsible for overseeing the voter list and electoral verification process.
According to the complaint submitted by the TMC to the commission, Adhikari allegedly said, “Just as many BLOs have gone to jail in Bihar, so too you will have to go in Bengal. We will provide such documents that you will have to go to jail.”
Calling the statement a “direct attack on the impartiality of the Election Commission and the security of government employees,” the Trinamool asserted that such remarks were made deliberately to create fear among election staff during the ongoing Special Intensified Revision (SIR) process of voter list in West Bengal.
The TMC, in its complaint, urged the commission to take three immediate steps— file a criminal case (FIR) against Adhikari, issue strict orders to ensure the safety of all booth-level officers and election workers across Bengal and make a public declaration that legal action will be taken against any political leader or party found intimidating election officials.
The ruling party further claimed that Adhikari’s comments amount to a “cognisable offence”, constituting criminal intimidation. “If an elected public representative threatens to send government workers to jail, it is not only unacceptable, but also a direct attack on the democratic system,” the complaint read.
The TMC has urged the Election Commission to act swiftly and firmly to ensure that the election process in West Bengal remains free, fair, and uninfluenced by fear or coercion.
