Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, lodging a formal complaint over a protest he faced at Kolkata Airport and alleging the involvement of two BJP MLAs in the incident. Terming the episode a breach of privilege, Roy has sought appropriate action against the accused legislators.
According to Roy, the protest occurred on Tuesday afternoon when he arrived at the airport to attend an official meeting in his capacity as Chairman of the Kolkata Airport Advisory Committee. As his vehicle entered the airport premises, a group of individuals allegedly surrounded it, shouting slogans such as “Go Back” and “Thief, Thief,” while waving black flags.
The situation escalated beyond sloganeering, with claims that the protesters shoved his car and even struck it with a shoe. Security personnel later intervened and brought the situation under control.
In his complaint to the Speaker, Roy named BJP MLAs Arijit Bakshi and Sourav Sikdar, alleging that the protest took place in their presence and had their direct support. He claimed that the demonstrators were BJP supporters and held the party responsible for orchestrating the protest.
Roy expressed shock and indignation, stating that he had never anticipated facing such hostility while attending an official meeting. He reiterated his demand for action against the two MLAs, citing the seriousness of the incident and its implications for parliamentary privilege.
The protest against Roy comes amid a series of reported demonstrations targeting TMC leaders and workers across West Bengal. In recent times, such protests have included slogan-shouting, black flag demonstrations, and instances of objects like eggs being hurled at political figures.
