Putting an end to days of speculation, Firhad Hakim on Friday resigned from his post as the Mayor of Kolkata after obtaining prior consent from former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Addressing an emotional press conference shortly after stepping down, Hakim — popularly known as ‘Bobby’ — expressed deep frustration over what he described as his inability to effectively discharge his responsibilities. “In the current situation, I was unable to carry out even the routine functions of the municipality. I cannot simply cling to this chair out of a lust for power,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure, Hakim asserted that he had consistently tried to address both major and minor civic issues with sincerity while standing by the people of Kolkata in times of crisis and celebration alike.

He also recalled some of the most challenging phases of his administration, including the aftermath of Cyclone Amphan and the COVID-19 pandemic. “Restoring Kolkata after the devastation caused by Amphan was a massive challenge. Even during the terrifying days of COVID, we fought valiantly and worked day and night to save lives,” he said.

Highlighting key initiatives undertaken during his tenure, Hakim pointed to the ‘Talk to Mayor’ programme, which aimed to directly address citizens’ grievances. He also cited measures to curb illegal high-rise constructions and efforts to revamp the city’s drainage system—an issue that has long plagued Kolkata during the monsoon season.

Explaining the reasons behind his resignation, Hakim said he no longer felt capable of upholding the dignity and responsibilities associated with the historic office. “It is no longer possible to provide all civic services effectively. I cannot perform the duties I once carried out with pride and authority. I feel I can no longer uphold the prestige of this position,” he stated.

Drawing a stark analogy, Hakim described his situation as that of a commander without a shield or sword— rendered powerless and ineffective. He acknowledged that he was stepping down with several unfinished tasks and unfulfilled aspirations.

Concluding his remarks, Hakim extended his best wishes to those who will lead the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in the future, expressing hope that they would serve the city more effectively. He also appealed to the state’s leadership to ensure continued administrative support for the people of Kolkata and to safeguard their access to essential civic services.
