A youth wing leader of Trinamool Congress (TMC) was murdered while attending a New Year’s Eve picnic in Raiganj, North Dinajpur district, on Wednesday night.
The deceased has been identified as Nabyendu Ghosh (37), vice-president of the TMC’s youth wing in North Dinajpur. Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident and arrested two persons by Thursday morning. The police are probing whether the killing was driven by political rivalry or personal enmity.
According to local sources, Ghosh was having a picnic with friends near his residence in the Mohanbati market area of Raiganj to welcome the New Year.
During the gathering, several assailants reportedly arrived at the spot on motorcycles and launched a sudden attack on him. He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Raiganj Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The murder has caused widespread sensation in Raiganj and surrounding areas, with the incident also fuelling political speculation ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Ghosh’s family has alleged that the murder was the result of a planned conspiracy. His mother said her son had no known disputes. “On Wednesday night, he hugged me, wished me Happy New Year and left the house. This incident was orchestrated as part of a conspiracy. He was running a shop and spending time at home. We don’t know who harboured such enmity against him,” she said.
Echoing her claims, Ghosh’s father said, “My son came home before midnight to wish us Happy New Year. Then he went to the picnic. I don’t know why this happened. He didn’t have any enemies. This incident was planned.”
Family members also informed the police that Ghosh owned a mobile phone worth around Rs 1.5 lakh which is missing. Investigators are examining whether robbery was a motive behind the murder or if other factors were involved.
Raiganj police station has registered a case and intensified the probe. After reviewing CCTV footage from the area, police arrested two suspects. Further investigation is underway to identify all those involved and ascertain the exact motive behind the killing.
