Law enforcement has also issued a stern warning against reckless riding and bike stunts; 30 special teams are being deployed specifically to intercept illegal racers and stunt performers on public roads.

In a move aimed at keeping the streets safe and orderly, the Tamil Nadu government has imposed a total ban on firecrackers during the festivities. Families planning to head out should also be aware that children will strictly not be allowed inside any establishments that serve alcohol.

For those planning to navigate the city on New Year's Eve, all flyovers will be shut down from 10 PM on December 31 until 6 AM on January 1. This is a deliberate step to curb overcrowding and prevent the high-speed accidents that often mar the holiday. Law enforcement has also issued a stern warning against reckless riding and bike stunts; 30 special teams are being deployed specifically to intercept illegal racers and stunt performers on public roads.

The scale of the operation is massive. In Chennai alone, nearly 90,000 police personnel will be on duty, supported by 425 vehicle check posts scattered throughout the city. It’s not just the nightlife spots getting attention— security is also being ramped up at over 100 temples across the state. To maintain a bird’s-eye view of the crowds, the police will use drones for aerial surveillance, while traditional patrolling will continue on foot, horseback, and in vehicles.

This presence will be particularly heavy along Marina Beach, Santhome, and Elliott’s Beach, where the largest gatherings are expected. With assistance booths stationed at various points, authorities are appealing to the public to welcome the new year responsibly and cooperate with the officers on the ground.
