Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced the development of a real-time flood forecasting system for Chennai, aimed at providing street and ward-level alerts during the Northeast monsoon from October to December.
This system, built in collaboration with independent weather blogger Pradeep John and the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL), will inform residents about expected water stagnation levels on their streets.
Stalin emphasized the importance of real-time rainfall data for accurate flood warnings and efficient water discharge management. The state has installed 1,400 rain gauges, including 50 in Chennai, to enhance flood monitoring capabilities.
Reflecting on last year’s severe monsoon, which caused significant damage due to climate change, Stalin stressed the importance of minimising loss of life.
Additionally, the state has launched the "TN-Alert" mobile app to provide real-time weather updates, forecasts, rainfall data, and reservoir levels in Tamil.
Stalin also highlighted the inauguration of the upgraded State Emergency Control Centre in Chennai, which operates with a multidisciplinary team to manage emergencies.
