The battle over Vijay’s final film, ‘Jana Nayagan’, has moved beyond the cinema halls and straight into the political arena. On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi’s vocal support for the film — which is currently caught in a legal tangle with the Censor Board — sparked a flurry of speculation about a potential shift in Tamil Nadu's political alliances.
The TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) was quick to label Gandhi’s stance a "friendly gesture." A senior party leader noted that this isn't the first time the Congress leader has reached out; he reportedly spoke with Vijay back in September 2024 following the tragic stampede in Karur. While the TVK welcomed the support, they were careful to stay non-committal on future pacts. "Any decision on an alliance for the 2026 elections rests solely with our party chief," a spokesperson remarked.
The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), however, was even more eager to downplay any talk of a new political marriage. Senior Congress leaders insisted that Gandhi’s criticism was aimed squarely at the "fascist" tactics of the I&B Ministry and had nothing to do with local seat-sharing. One leader went as far as to say it is "200 per cent clear" that Congress will remain firmly in the DMK camp.
The film itself, produced by KVN Productions, is stuck after the Madras High Court stayed a directive for its release. Rahul Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter) to call the blockage an "attack on Tamil culture," warning the Modi government that it would never succeed in "suppressing the voice of the Tamil people."
The BJP, meanwhile, wasn't about to let the comments slide. State spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy accused the Congress of blatant hypocrisy, pointing out that while they cry foul over ‘Jana Nayagan’, they have historically sought bans on other films. He called the Congress's support for the movie a "shameful" political compromise.
As the legal fight moves to the Supreme Court, TVK joint general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar reiterated that the BJP remains the party's "ideological enemy." For now, the focus for Vijay’s camp isn't on the 2026 ballot, but simply on getting ‘Jana Nayagan’ onto the big screen so fans can watch what is expected to be the superstar’s final bow before he goes all-in on politics.
