In a tragic road accident on Saturday a tourist couple from Gujarat lost their lives when a Tavera vehicle bearing registration number JK21A-0379 skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge while travelling from Pahalgam towards Aru in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Officials said the vehicle was being driven by Rayees Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, a resident of Rangward Laripora. The mishap resulted in the death of two tourists from Gujarat and injuries to two others. The deceased have been identified as Bawin Bhavsar, son of Mahesh Bhavsar, who was brought dead to Sub-District Hospital Pahalgam, and his wife Awni Bhavsar, who succumbed to injuries after sustaining severe trauma to her left leg.
The injured tourists have been identified as Naina Ben, wife of Ashok Bhai, and Ashok Bhai, whose parentage could not be immediately confirmed. Both are residents of Gujarat and are undergoing treatment before being referred for advanced medical care.
Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle also sustained injuries in the accident and has been referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for treatment.Police have taken cognizance of the incident, while further investigation into the case has been initiated.
Even though Pahalgam-Aru road is a scenic, 12-kilometer mountain route in Jammu & Kashmir connecting Pahalgam to the tranquil Aru Valley, certain stretches are narrow making it difficult for drivers to negotiate under adverse weather conditions. It is known for breathtaking views of the Lidder River and dense pine forests, but the winding, narrow path requires highly cautious driving, said an official.
Though this has remained a favorite tourist destination for the tourists especially trekkers, the place remained out of bounds for some time in the past due to closure order enforced by the government post Pahalgam terror attack for security reasons. However, in the order issued recently, this spot was also declared opened by the authorities, much to delight of the tourists.
