A tourist was seriously hurt after falling from a great height during a bungee jump near Rishikesh, police said on Friday. He fell after the bungee cord snapped mid-air at an adventure sports centre.
As per the police, the incident took place on Wednesday evening at Apara Amusement Thrill Factory in Shivpuri. Sonu Kumar was jumping when the bungee cord broke and he fell.
Kumar was taken to AIIMS Rishikesh for treatment. He suffered broken ribs and a fractured left hand, but his condition is now stable, Muni Ki Reti Police Station Inspector-in-Charge Pradeep Chauhan said.
Kumar, who lives in Gurugram in Haryana, had come to Rishikesh with four friends — Vikram, Rajesh, Akshay and Rajkumar. He has not yet filed a complaint about the accident, Chauhan added.
The administration has ordered a probe into the incident, Tehri District Magistrate Nitika Khandelwal said. She said the sub-divisional magistrate of Narendranagar has been asked to probe the matter and submit a report within three days.
After the incident, bungee jumping at Apara Amusement Thrill Factory was stopped with immediate effect, Tehri District Tourism Development Officer S S Rana said.
He added that a safety audit will now be carried out at all adventure sports centres in the district. The aim is to prevent such accidents in the future.
